Demonstrate the ability to incorporate the dimensions of person, nursing, and environment to promote health in a variety of nursing situations.

» Nursing 220
This nursing competencies I is a basic class that focuses on the core knowledge and competencies of therapeutic communication, and technical skills associated with health management. Our first round of clinicals took place in this class where we spent several months caring for individuals in a long term care facility. In the facility I worked in, each student was first assigned to one patient and as we grew more comfortable we were assigned to several patients. Before clinicals began, basic testing was done on our skills to make sure we were competent. In my Clinical Skills Checklist, the list provides the competencies gained from this class. We also had the opportunity to go to an Adult Day Center where adults and youths were cared for. These clinicals, among others, are listed in my Record of Clinical Practice.

» Nursing 270
Health Assessment and Promotion focused on the core knowledge and competencies necessary to preform health assessments and promote health across the life span. This class has now started a program with Multicare which allows PLU students to help in health promotion of congestive heart failure patients. Although this program aids us in finding the best strategies for health promotion in individuals and allows for experience, we do not preform any physical skills on this patient this semester. In the health promotion portion of this class, our Health Promotion Project allowed us the experience to teach others in the community.

Meeting the outcome and reflection

By demonstrating skills learned in our 220 class, I was able to provide care to the elderly in the long term care facility. The class allowed me to look at the person as a whole rather than a functional task. In order to be included in the clinical rotations, a test was passed where we were checked on our skills. In nursing 270, the focus shifted from secondary to primary care. The Health Promotion Project allowed us to not only teach a different group of people (vs 220) but it allowed us to care for these people in a different way by promoting health rather than preforming it ourselves.

Although the class was not long ago, I feel that since then I have come a long way. My learning skills have been adapting and my idea of care has also changed. Learning the skills in a lab preforming them on a dummy and preforming them on a person feels like two extremes. The health project allows me to understand the importance that people play in their own lives and how we can encourage a positive change.
