Phylogenies, such as the
one to the left, can be scary but useful ways to visualize the evolutionary
relationships between related groups. By clicking on this phylogeny, you will
go to a taxonomic hierarchy that shows how different groups of fish are related
taxonomically (not necessarily evolutionarily). Within this taxonomic hierarchy,
you can click on the name of many of these groups to find morphological and
ecological information on the group and how they relate to taxonomic levels
above and below them. The information for these sites comes directly out of
the taxonomy handouts you have received in lab section and will be required
for the quizzes and lab practical. Hopefully you will be able to use this website
to both study outside of lab section and better conceptualize the relationships
between the numerous taxonomic levels you will learn this quarter. If you find
it difficult to read the taxonomic names that are printed vertically, you might
find it helpful to print out a copy of the entire taxonomic
hierarchy as a guide.
