The Beginnings
Quetzalcoatl was creating the world and humanity with the other gods, when Quetzalcoatl and his twin Xolotl take a difficult journey to the underworld to collect bones and ashes from the fourth world. To do this he had to steal them from the Lord of the Underworld Mictlantecutli. On their way there they fought off several ambushes from Mictlantecutli on there way to the final level on the underworld (Mictlan). Once Quetzalcoatl had the bones and ashes Mictlantecutli tried to block Quetzalcoatl's way causing him to drop and shatter the bones and spill the ashes. He was able to retrieve most of the bones back and through self sacrifice with other gods their blood brought life to the pulverized bones and ashes creating the fifth world. (Berdan 2005).
