The programming theories that I will utilize in the development of my program are the Motivation-Based and the Symbolic Interaction Theories.
The Motivation-Based Theory implies that the leisure and recreation programs should result in the satisfying of an individual or groups needs. The need of a group or individual is viewed as a motivator that drives the people to be involved in leisure or recreation programs. People have needs, so as long as needs are unfulfilled, people are motivated to get involved in a leisure or recreation program.
The Symbolic Interaction Theory is the interaction and meaning that people receive from each other, equipment, facilities, rules, etc… These meanings are formed through communication between individuals, because through communication, symbols are created forming shared meanings. Using this theory, the program planner must involve him or herself, in the process of understanding participants and their behaviors. Learning the interpretations of people (seeing through their eyes), is also an important part in Symbolic Interaction programming.
Each theory has its own focus and
goal. I plan on using each of these angles to form a program that will be beneficial
for all people. My program planning will focus on the needs and interpretations
of every type of person, as well as getting to know the community around me.
Knowing the community and who lives there, will be very important in the
programming process. I will plan and create new opportunities as well as
participate in community events, in order to observe and discover the people’s
needs. The Motivation-Based Theory and the Symbolic Interaction Theory have
helped me see programming in a different way, leading me to a better visual of
what I want my program to look like.
