"The Yangtze River Delta is one of the most important engines of China's economy, and surpasses all other regions (including the Pearl River Delta) in China in terms of economic growth, productivity and per capita income. Occupying less than 1% of China's land and 5.8% of its population, the YRD region contributed to over 35% of the country's total import and export value, more than 22% of its tax revenues and close to 20% of China's GDP in the first three quarters of 2005."

"The region is also one of the most densely populated regions on earth, and the population of Shanghai reached 17.78 million (permanent residents) in 2005, with a density of 2,700 inhabitants/km2. Most of the people in this region speak Wu Chinese as their mother tongue, in addition to Mandarin. Wu is mutually unintelligible with other varieties of Chinese including Mandarin."
