Carbohydrate Counting for Healthcare Providers

Diabetes is a chronic progressive disease that requires lifestyle changes, especially in the area of nutrition.  This course will give the health care provider the tools to initiate Nutrition Therapy prior to consultation with a Registered Dietician or Certified Diabetes Educator.  The education content will improve the individual provider’s the ability to assist a person with diabetes in making self-directed behavioral changes concerning nutrition.  The workshop will give the provider an improved understanding in matching Nutrition with Medication therapies.

Presenters include

Becky Blodgett, MSN, ARNP, CDE, is a Family Nurse Practitioner at the Puyallup Clinic in Puyallup WA. Early in her career she worked in acute care settings including critical care and emergency. After earning her ARNP credential she joined the family practice and internal medicine physician group at the Puyallup Clinic. Becky has over 10 years experience as a Certified Diabetes Educator and is active in the Diabetes Association of Pierce County. She is the Medical Director of Camp Panther, a camp for children with Type I diabetes.

Courtney Albert, MSN, ARNP, CDE is a Family nurse Practitioner at the Puyallup Endocrine Clinic. Early in her career she worked in critical care. After earning her ARNP credential she joined the Puyallup Endocrine Clinic with a strong interest in the education of our community.

Martha Wells, RD, CDE is a certified diabetes educator and Supervisor of Franciscan Health System Diabetes Services. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky and has been a diabetes educator for 15 years. She serves on the Board of the Washington Association of Diabetes Educators and is editor of the WADE newsletter. As a diabetes educator she strives to empower individuals to change behaviors to improve their diabetes management and their overall health.

Jeanne Cullen, MS, RD, CD, CDE is a Certified Diabetes Educator and trained Chef from the Culinary Institute of America. She received her Master's degree in nutrition from Bastyr University. Jeanne combines her love of cooking and whole foods philosophy to work with prevention and management of chronic diseases. Jeanne worked for the Diabetes Prevention Program at one time, and specializes in diabetes education because she knows that good nutrition practices can have such a positive outcome on better blood sugar control.

   Health System, Franciscan Health System and Diabetes Exercise and Sport Association.

   This educational activity is appropriate for Category 2 CME for physicians.
