Course Description:
This course will focus on the application of the nursing process to
problems common to the K-12 school-age population that are prevalent in
the school environment. The nurse's role in the development and
implementation of school health programs will be discussed. Content
will include assessment of the school-age child, growth and
development, screening, school administration, school law, and role
implementation. For semester credit, admission is open to baccalaureate
prepared RNs. In addition to the continuing education offering
completion requirements, a written assignment will be required.
Course Objectives
- Discuss the role of schools in society.

Analyze the role of
school nurse specialist: practitioner, collaborator, professional.

Integrate theory and
application of both human growth and development and learning into the
practice of school nursing.

Analyze current
social and legal issues that influence school health and the school
nurse role, including knowledge of American school law.

Explore health problems specific to the school-age person.

Discuss the specific
ESA role in the school setting including the state learning goals and
essential academic learning requirements

Discriminates among
ESA professional roles in relation to school health programs and
activities benefiting students.

Course Instruction
Presented by Janice Doyle, MSN, RN,
NCSN, School Nurse with a Continuing ESA Certificate. Ms. Doyle has 13 years
experience in Tacoma area schools and is an instructor for school
health and school nursing. She is a member of the state (SNOW) and
national (NASN) school nurse organizations.
This course meets the Washington OSPI 30
clock hour course requirement for Initial ESA Certification for BSN
prepared RNs. This course meets the TSPC standard for the Oregon School
Nurse License. Optional academic credit is available for BSN prepared
RNs.

CANCELLATION:
Cancellations are assessed a $20 per person processing
fee. If you notify us at least five business days before the program,
we'll refund your tuition less the processing fee. A full refund will
be made for cancellation by the college or when a class limit has been
reached. PLU reserves the right to cancel any offering when
registration is insufficient to meet requirements and to set limits for
numbers of participants for optimum teaching/learning conditions.
