Geriatric Assessment

Using lecture, demonstration and practice you will be guided through the process of adapting an adult comprehensive health assessment to the older patient/client. Skill will be gained in differentiating normal changes of aging from signs and symptoms of chronic conditions common to each body system. You will gain proficiency with focused assessment in response to common clinical pictures presented by this population.

Objectives:

Identify six characteristics unique to the older adult population, which affect the nursing assessment.
Discuss four categories of adaptation the nurse must incorporate into a successful assessment of the older adult.
Describe the key elements of a comprehensive health history of the older adult.
Identify normal age-related changes in each body system.
Differentiate between normal changes of aging and the signs and symptoms of common chronic conditions.
