Pediatric Assessment
Monday & Tuesday, July 12 & 13, 2010, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
This two-day workshop has been designed for registered nurses who wish to develop and improve their ability to assess the health status of a child. Nurses employed at schools, hospitals, and other agencies who are concerned with the health and illness of children will benefit from this program. Participants will learn to elicit age-appropriate, culturally sensitive health histories using appropriate interview techniques; perform a basic health assessment of a child; record pertinent dimensions of clients’ health status; demonstrate competence using tools in gathering health data and analyze data in determining health status of client.
OBJECTIVES
As a result of attending selected sessions, participants will be able to achieve objectives from the following:
- State at least 4 important factors to consider when dealing with the pediatric patient.
- Discuss developmental approaches to assessing the pediatric.
- Perform a developmentally appropriate assessment and focused history on a child.
- Explain how the Pediatric Assessment Triangle can help determine the severity of a child’s illness or injury and identify the potential physiologic problem.
- Identify normal ranges for pediatric vital signs.
- Describe the rapid assessment process for the ill or injured child
- Review common pediatric emergencies
- Discuss assessment priorities of each physiological system
- Review the unique things about the selected emergencies presented
- Review basic treatment trends
- Describe the performance of an age appropriate a assessment for the pediatric patient for selected conditions
- For selected conditions discuss what to look for and what to listen for
- Discuss normal and abnormal assessment findings
- Identify red flags for a patient with selected conditions
