Chem Club Receives ACS Grant for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstrations

The Chem Club received a grant from the American Chemical Society Puget Sound Section to purchase two hydrogen fuel cell model cars, to be used as demonstrations of power from alternative energy sources.  Club members will use the models at science outreach activities with pre-college students, including the upcoming Desserts and Demos event (see below), which will be held in April  prior to Earth DayThe club hopes to raise awareness of 'green' power, and promote the role of chemistry in finding environmentally-friendly options.  Danny Hibbard and Mycah Uehling submitted the grant.

Desserts and Demos

Planning is underway for our next Desserts and Demos chemistry outreach event.  Students and teachers from local schools will be coming to campus for liquid nitrogen ice cream and desserts, hands-on chemistry activities, and some of favorite and flashy chemical demonstrationsthe to be done by PLU Chem faculty and students.  Contact one of the officers below if you are interested in helping out.  It's always a great deal of fun, and also an important way to share enthusiasm about chemistry with the community.  Desserts and Demos will be held in the evening on one of the of the following dates:  April 15, 16, or 17, 2008.  We'll update this page when the date is settled.

Chem Club Receives Honorable Mention Award from the American Chemical Society

The PLU Chemistry Club received an Honorable Mention Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS) for its activities in 2006-2007.  Representatives of the club will pick up the award at the ACS National Meeting in New Orleans this April.

Student Researchers to Present Posters at the New Orleans National Meeting of the American Chemical Society and the Asilomar ENC.

Student researchers Chelsea Berdahl, Elaina Daza, Nicole Grant, Chris Hamre, Danny Hibbard, Mallorie Taylor, and Mycah Uehling will present research posters in New Orleans at the 235th ACS National Meeting, to be held April 6-10, 2008. Their research was mentored by Drs. Cotten, Davis, Waldow, and Yakelis.  Go to the ACS National Meeting Technical Program to find their abstracts via name searches or to browse the program.  Approximately 15,000 chemists will be in attendance at the national meeting!  Eric Gordon is presenting his research with Dr. Cotten. at the ENC (Experimental NMR Conference) in Asilomar, CA

Chem Club to be featured in the ACS magazine "in Chemistry".

The PLU Chem Club will be featured in an upcoming issue "in Chemistry", the ACS magazine for Student Affiliates.  Check the magazine rack by the Chem faculty offices for issues of "in Chemistry". as well as online at through the ACS Student Affiliates web page.

Puget Sound ACS Local Section Activities

  • The Puget Sound Section of the ACS sponsors local activities.  One recent activity was a tour at Theo's Chocolates, a premium fair-trade chocolate manufacturere in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle.  PLU chem students Elaina Daza, Anna Kozlova, and Alica Che, as well as Drs. Davis, Fryhle, and Yakelis attended the tour.  There's a lot of chemistry in the making of chocolate, not to mention great taste-testing activities!

  • The 2008 Puget Sound Section Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held on April 26th  at the Evergreen State College.  Information is here.  PLU hosted the symposium in 2008.  Photos, abstracts, and the program are at http://www.chem.plu.edu/acs2007.html

  • Check the Puget Sound Section website for links to the "Puget Sound Chemist" monthly newsletter as well as information about upcoming speakers, tours, career sessions, and other events.
