This section gives information about Slobodon Milošević and other important actors in the Balkan conflict. Because many names have unfamiliar characters, we have included a pronunciation guide for Slavic languages. The Who’s Who section gives a brief overview of political leaders influential both in the conflict and in Milošević’s life. There are several surprising connections; for example, Ivan Stambolić, president of Serbia from 1908-1987 was the best man in Milošević’s wedding but was later assassinated, likely at the request of Milošević and his wife. We include a paper detailing Milošević’s reign and most specifically the political phenomena surrounding the 2000 election that led to his downfall. By learning more about Milošević, we can better understand the turmoil of the former Yugoslavia.
