Upon opening Thunderbird, my folders are missing. How do I find them?
Instructions for viewing these folders are on our web page at:http://www.plu.edu/~comptelc/support/mail-settings.html#tbirdFolders
How do I move my address books to the new Webmail?
You'll first create an archive of your address book, then import the file into the new webmail. You can only do this with your personal address book.
NOTE: Since you will need to refer to these instructions, either keep this page open or print it out for reference.
Create your archive:
Option 1 (archiving only your personal address book--does not include any of your mailing or distribution lists)
- Open the Webmail page
http://webmail.plu.edu- Under 'Related Links' on the right side of the window, click on
Retrieve Old Webmail Address Book- Select 'Save to Disk' and click on OK. The file should then be saved on your computer's desktop.
Option 2 (archiving your mail, personal address book and any mailing or distribution lists you've created)
- Go to the following page to archive your mail (Note: your mail has already been moved--this archive is meant to make a backup copy of your mail and give you the ability to import any address books or distribution lists):
https://epass.plu.edu/secured/cgi-bin/archive_email.pl- Once logged in, click on 'create email archive'. You will receive an e-mail in your PLU e-mail account that will include a web link you can use to download your archive."
- When the archive is complete, you will receive a message with a link to the web containing your archive. If you are unable to open it, you may not have a program necessary to open 'ZIP' files. Call the Help Desk at ext. 7525 if you do not have such a program.
- Click on the link in your email message. Select 'Save to disk' and click on OK. Make sure that you're saving your file to the desktop of your computer.
- View the desktop and find the file. If you have a zip program and double-click on the file, a new window will open containing several files. If this does not work, contact the Help Desk at ext. 7525.
- Find the file named "username-addressbook.csv" (where 'username' is your username). Click on that file and drag it to your desktop. If you also have mail or distribution lists, you'll see a file or files named "86928bf8-list.csv" where the exact numbers where will different than shown in the example. You'll also want to drag those files to your desktop so you can import them into Webmail.
Import the addressbook.csv file into Webmail:
- Log into Webmail and click on the "Addresses" link at the top of the page.
- Near the bottom of this page is a section of the page titled "Address Book Import". Click on the "Browse" button next to the "Select file:" text entry box and navigate to the file mentioned above. If you followed the 'archive' steps above, it should be on your desktop.
- Select it and click the "Import CSV File" button.
- You will see your address book formatted into three columns. The third column is the column with your email addresses. Click on the drop down box in that column and change the heading from 'LastName' to 'Email'. Then click 'Finish'. This should import the file and populate your new address book.
How do I create a mailing or distribution list in Webmail?
You can download the instructions here.
I'm confused as to why any emails I get with images in them show up with "This image has been removed for security purposes" instead of a photo. How can I view them?
What you're seeing is a security measure to help protect you against spam that has "infected" images. It's possible for someone to send you an image via e-mail that, if displayed, will install a virus on your computer. So, by default, Webmail doesn't show you the images. But, there is a link on the message page that says something like "Display Unsafe Images" which will allow the images to be viewed. There's another link that says something like "Always accept images from this source" that allows you to tell Webmail that you trust the sender of a message, so that all future messages from this source will show images.
I like the new webmail so much that I'd like to stop using my mail client (Thunderbird, etc.). How do I do that?
We're glad you like the new change but we strongly encourage you to not rely solely on webmail. If you have been using Webmail exclusively, consider using a mail client such as Thunderbird. When you first set up Thunderbird, or another program like it, choose IMAP settings so that your messages will appear in your email no matter where you go.
I've been trying to delete and manage my email message list--but no matter what I do, the percentage of messages keeps going up! It continues to increase even though I've cleaned up several folders. What can I do?
Empty your trash periodically
When you view your folders on the left side of the screen, you'll find a (Purge) option next to your trash folder when it needs to be emptied--click on the (Purge) link to empty.
View the folders that are taking up the most space
On the left side of the screen, scroll to the bottom. Click on "Folder sizes". The screen may take several seconds to refresh. The results will be a table displaying all of your folders by name, number of messages and size of each folder.
