The Theatre Program

in The Department of Communication & Theatre

Pacific Lutheran University takes great pride in its intimate and challenging Theatre program, in which we strive to train students in all aspects of the art – from acting and directing to technical theatre and design. In addition to a vigorous course load, we produce five mainstage shows per year, including one student-directed show and a major dance performance. The students also produce a musical review, a one-act play festival, evenings of improvisation, and various other off-the-mainstage productions.

Students are given numerous opportunities to explore each facet of the production process. Graduates boast of having tried their hands at acting, directing, building and painting sets, designing and realizing sound and lights, creating costumes, gathering props, working backstage, and stage managing. We encourage our students to delve deeply into their specific areas of interest. We trust them with a great deal of responsibility and leadership in their individual fields. This gives juniors and seniors a challenge while providing first- and second-year students with a substantial learning opportunity working with their more experienced peers.

PLU offers a BA and a BFA in both Acting/Directing and Design/Technical Theatre. All PLU students are encouraged to participate, however; majors and non-majors alike are welcomed into all components of the process.

Our Theatre program is set apart from the rest because of our dedicated and approachable faculty, our close-knit and diverse student community, and our deep appreciation and respect for the ever-changing role of theatre in society.

We’re also excited to announce the upcoming re-model of our beloved Eastvold Auditorium. This renovation will provide new and refurbished spaces for the performing arts, including the current theatre stage, a black box/studio theatre, an arena for speaker’s forums, and outlying office and classroom areas as a place for breakout sessions. Theatre faculty will also be located in the same building as the stage, allowing them to spend more time in their teaching arena and giving students quick and easy access to their offices.
