Health is an all-encompassing state of being. Since nursing is a profession of supporting health, I see my present and future roles in nursing as holistic. The work that Lillian Wald and others did and continue to do in places like the Henry Street Settlement model my own hopes for the role I will play in the profession of nursing. The Henry Street Settlement improved on the health of the community through an innovative and holistic approach. A new playground, a gymnasium, and interest-free loans all supported the health of individuals in the community, just as the administration of penicillin for bacterial pneumonia.
As future nurses we are faced with similar societal challenges to the individual and communal health of our society. These challenges include stress on the family structure, an abundance of low-nutrient dense, highly chemicalized food, an on-going recession, an under insured and uninsured populace, and increasingly poor air quality in our towns and cities.
These are among our challenges. It is my primary goal over the next 2-5 years to strive towards preparing myself for the role of meeting the need for strong, compassionate, innovative nursing in our communities. My nursing-related interests include public policy, and direct service in the areas of mental health and pediatrics. I feel blessed to have found my calling in life and look forward to the next few years as I continue to build my foundation of knowledge and experience in this life-affirming profession.
