Working in Groups

Group work in math class is new to many students. Working together students can solve harder problems than when working individually, but the main point of group work is not getting an answer. It is learning how to communicate mathematically. It is learning to clearly verbalize questions about those hazy points that are confusing. It is learning to give clear answers - with reasons - to explain what you know. By communicating with colleagues - sometimes as a learner and sometimes as a teacher - that one comes to really know mathematics. The following guidelines will help you foster this communication.

1. Above all be present; be on time; be prepared! Come each day with your work on the previous homework done - in writing. This means you have written down your questions as well as answers.

2. Encourage everyone to participate, no one to dominate. Express support and acceptance of other group members both verbally and nonverbally. Make eye contact, show interest, seek out other's ideas.

3. Listen attentively to what other's are saying. Don't interrupt.

4. If you disagree with a solution, do so by asking helpful questions. Do not merely state your solution. You both may be "right". There are often many approaches to a problem and it helps to see more than one. Focus all criticism on ideas (not people) and help each other to be sure the ideas can stand up to critical examination.

5. Understanding a problem means more than knowing the answer - much more. It's not enough to show someone the answer; also explain your reasoning and how you came up with your plan. If you can't explain your solution to someone else (verbally and in writing) then you haven't solved the problem!

6. Be persuaded by the logic of answers, not by group pressure. Learn to be schizophrenic: keep an open ear and mind, but do not accept any solution until the entire solution is completely clear and all uncertainties have been clearly and completely explained.

7. Practice ALL the following roles when working with others in your group:
