COURSE GOALS

CLASS ATTENDANCE IS EXPECTED

Attendance is expected. If you cannot make it to class let your instructor know so he/she will not think you are skipping class intentionally. Lack of attendance will adversely affect your grade.

HOMEWORK

You must be willing to spend at least 2 hours outside of class for each hour of class time. If you don't have or are unwilling to commit this much time your chances for success are minimal.

The purpose of homework us to give you practice and to check your mastery of the subject. You should thoughtfully read the text and lecture notes before attempting the homework problems and then you should work the problems without referring back to the text. If you have difficulty with the problems, iterate the two steps in the previous sentence.

Daily assignments will be given. You are expected to work on these for the next class meeting. Questions about homework will be addressed in class, but you learn the most if you are able to work the homework problems on your own.

Homework assignments will be collected every class period. In general, homework assigned on Monday will be due on Friday, homework assigned on Wednesday will be due on Monday and homework assigned on Friday will be due on Wednesday.

Homework should be neatly written in pencil. You should write your name, homework date, the page number and the homework problems assigned on the upper right corner of the homework paper. Also, the problems should be clearly labeled next to the solution. Answers must be circled. Please show all necessary work and write using good mathematical language. Please see the handout on 'Guidelines for Written Work'.

Each assignment will be graded on a scale of 0 to 10. "0" if no paper was turned in. If most of the problems are incorrect but there is a clear indication of effort the homework will receive a "3". In addition one point will be given for each of four problems selected by the grader, an extra two points for clearly writing correct mathematical language and another one point for neatness and organization.

Homework will be collected during the beginning of each class period. To be fair to your classmates and the grader and to encourage good habits, late homework is not accepted. Missing 1 or 2 homework assignments will not adversely affect your grade.

EXAMS

Plan on taking a quiz or exam every Friday. There will be no make-up quizzes or exams.

You are expected to take tests at the scheduled time. Any conflicts must be cleared with me before test time. If you fail to attend a test without having made other arrangements with me prior to the test, plan on receiving a zero for that test.

Exam dates(tentative): Exam 1 October 9th, Exam 2 November 6th, Exam 3 December 1st.

Final: 8:00 am Section, December 11, Monday 8:00-9:50 am

9:15 am Section, December 11, Monday 1:00-2:50 pm
