Professionalism in group work

Group contracts

This is an example of a group contract that I have signed with my group members that shows my dedication and responsibility to my group work. This contract helped our group maintain integrity to be effective and get things done.

  Evaluations

Evaluations are an important part of a profession because they are an effective way to assess skills and progress. Just as nurses use the nursing process to treat clients to produce outcomes, we must assess and evaluate ourselves to be sure that we are achieving our own professional outcomes. Below I have included some important evaluations I have had so far.
Change project team evaluation:This is a self and peer evaluation.  This is a style of evaluation which will be used in my future employment, but also self-evaluation is a critical skill in nursing.  One must always know one's strengths and weaknesses in order to practice safely.
Camp Tawonga Infirmary evaluation:The Camp Tawonga evaluation here is my first evaluation in a health care job. I was a Medical Assistant and had just completed sophomore year.  I believe the weaknesses identified in this evaluation such as tardiness or professional communication have been since resolved as evidenced by my evaluation in Med/Surg II during my senior year.
Each evaluation is a new opportunity to identify goals for improved practice with the end goal of becoming an expert nurse.  However, when I asked one "How did you know when you had become a competent nurse?", she wisely replied, "That constantly changes."  True to word, there is always more to learn.

Professional Association Essay

This essay was written to investigate the role a profession can play in a nurse's career. I researched the Oncology Nursing Society. Being a member in this organization can give access to evidence-based practice, leadership opportunities, and networking capabilities. Choosing to join a professional organization as a beginning nurse demonstrates ones ability to promote the profession of nursing.

As a sophomore I was not aware of what a professional organization could do. However, my exposure to Delta Iota Chi, the professional student nurses organization on campus, helped me realize what nurses can accomplish when they band together. We took on many social action projects and brought speakers to further our understanding of nursing. Joining a post collegiate professional organization would further my education in nursing and give me a medium in which to volunteer.

Certifications

Certifications prove my commitment to continued education.  Some of these certifications are necessary to become a professional certified RN in the State of Washington such as the CPR, HIPPA and AIDS education certifications. However, others have been achieved to improve my scope of practice such as the Certified Nursing Assistant, Federal Emergency Management Agency certification, Wilderness First Responder, and Nurse Technician.  Becoming a Wilderness First Responder was necessary for me to work in an overnight camp, but it was also one of the most fun courses outside of Nursing school I have ever taken.  I am proud to have this certification as it enlarges my scope of practice and knowledge in health care.  My nurse technician liscensure has allowed me to learn and improve nursing skills in a hospital setting.  I am grateful for how much it has helped me become a competent nurse.

Further Development

I believe that I can continue my professional growth through evaluations from my future employer.  At college I have continued my Spanish language studies and I hope to become a certified translator so I can of most use to my organization and this population very near and dear to my heart.  I also want to discuss here the commitments nurses have to their profession which are outside of hospital policy.  I will keep my community safe by never going to grocery stores after work in order to prevent contamination of food with hospital germs.  I will promote the profession of nursing to the public by fighting negative images of nurses and promoting positive ones.  I will maintain confidentiality of my patients so that people will know they can trust me.  Professionalism isn't something just for the work place, but a commitment to the community at large.

Signs of a Professional

  2. Is based on a body of knowledge that can be learned and is refreshed and refined through research.

What is accountability and responsibility?

Accountability:  Being answerable to someone for something one has done or not done. It means providing an answer to self, to the client, to the employing agency, to the nursing profession, and to society.

Responsibility:  The social force that binds you to your obligations and the courses of action demanded by that force.

"Overcoming Preconceived Notions"

This is by far the best piece I have ever read on professionalism!  In this article submitted to Clinician's Review, 2004, Mr. Malik CPT, PA-C demonstrates professionalism and caring when working with a diverse patient group by reflecting on his own values and overcoming preconceived notions.
