Service to the Community

Service to the Community

"We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give." - Winston Churchill

I believe everyone has a responsibility to give back to the communities in which they live. Helping others is something that I have a great passion for. Throughout college, I have had the opportunity to give back to the communities in which I live in a variety of ways.

Tutoring and Counseling at Burbank Middle School

communityWhile attending Occidental College, I was fortunate enough to be able to work with 6th grade boys and girls at a local middle school. These kids came from low income, often single parent households, and were considered to be "at risk" students by their school. What I mean by "at risk" is that they had a high chance of dropping out of school or joining gangs. Through a program called L.A. Bridges, we tutored these kids in math, reading, computers, arts and crafts, and cooking five days a week. We provided an environment where these kids could learn and have fun at the same time.

Working at the Pierce County AIDS Foundation

Beginning in the summer of 2007, I began working at the Pierce County AIDS foundation. I have always been an advocate for HIV/AIDS research, and felt that working at PCAF would be an amazing experience for me. During my time there I provided various services to the clients, helped organize and participated in the 2007 Pierce County AIDS Walk, and volunteered at several events run by the foundation.

Tutoring at Stanley Elementary School

During January of 2007, I was a volunteer tutor at Stanley Elementary school in Tacoma, WA. I mainly worked with 2nd and 3rd grade student, helping them with math, reading, and music. I greatly enjoyed working with these kids, as they were so full of life and talent.
