CHINA: BRIDGES FOR A NEW CENTURY

An introduction to the China Symposium

PLU's Wang Center For International Programs is proud to invite you to our inaugural public symposium on Thursday, April 10, through Saturday, April 12, 2003. "China: Bridges For a New Century" will examine China's place in the global community and contemporary issues related to Chinese culture, economy and society. Speakers from China, Japan, Norway and North America will discuss economic development, business and trade, health care, human rights, youth culture and school reform, technology, spiritual life and the arts.

This stimulating conference will provide multiple points of view and avenues for cross-cultural engagement. Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Yang Jiechi and Former US Ambassador to China, J. Stapleton Roy have been invited to present keynote addresses. Other speakers on the program include Nicholas Lardy, a senior fellow at the Institute for International Economics and a leading expert on the Chinese economy; Warren Cohen, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, author of many books on Asian American relations; and Winston K. Zee, a 1976 graduate of PLU with the law firm of Baker & McKenzie in Hong Kong. Joining them will be a number of other professionals and scholars from Peking University, Nanjing University, Hosei University, US China Business Council, Frank Russell Company, and other US and overseas universities and organizations.

The Wang Center for International Programs was established in 2002 with a $4 million gift from Peter and Grace Wang to work toward global understanding and peace.
