The University Scholars Association was founded in 1972. A resolution passed at the April 21, 1972 meeting of the faculty assembly provided for the appointment of a committee to study the feasibility of establishing a "faculty club." Those appointed to the committee were Richard Jungkuntz, William Hutcheon, Curtis Huber, Larry Meyer, Phil Nordquist, Burton Nesset, Frank Olson, Gene Lundgard, and Charles Nelson. The committee approached Cap Jacobs, then a member of the PLU faculty, who had recently purchased a house at 715 South 121st Street in Parkland. Despite the fact that Jacobs had only own the house a short time, he agreed to sell it. Financing was arranged by Dwight Zulauf, who found an investor (Paul Asklund, a former PLU employee and an MBA graduate of PLU) who bought out Jacobs' equity in the property. Once the facility was secured, a committee consisting of Jungkuntz, Huber, Hutcheon, Nelson (as well as Tony Lauer) drew up a constitution and by-laws. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization under Chapter 24.03 of the Revised Code of State of Washington. The USA is also a 501(c)4, tax-exempt organization for Federal income tax purposes. |
