What is the purpose of PLUMS?
The purpose of this program is to provide financial assistance for undergraduate students who attend Pacific Lutheran University. Through the PLUMS program PLU will annually match, dollar-for-dollar individual scholarships from $100 to $1,000 provided by congregations or organizations within the church to students attending PLU.
Who is Eligible?
To qualify, a student must be:
- offered admission or currently enrolled at PLU
- a full-time undergraduate student, and
- selected by a congregation
How are students benefited by PLUMS?
- Recipients will be actively encouraged by the congregation to enroll at PLU
- Recipients may be publicly recognized for their contribution to the life of the church
- The scholarships will reduce the student's educational costs. This scholarship program is not based on financial need. However, students awarded financial aid on a need basis may require revision of their financial aid award. In most cases the addition of the PLUMS scholarship will increase the amount of gift assistance offered by the full dollar amount of the PLUMS award.
How is the program administered?
PLU matches scholarship monies received from congregations, up to $1,000, based on the following stipulations:
- PLUMS is a cooperative effort of the congregation's selection committee and the PLU Financial Aid Office.
- Application is required each year, up to 4 years
- PLUMS has limited funding and will be awarded until the current year's funds are depleted, OR August 15th
- Church payments must be received no later than October 1 in order to be matched
- Church payments must be made payable to PLU
- Financial Need is not a consideration
- PLUMS Certificates may be requested for Special Recognition Services. See Application.
Congregational Contribution
An Internal Revenue Service regulation prevents the designation of any recipient by an individual donor. Further, it is assumed by PLU that the funding for the program will be provided through the congregation or by an auxiliary of the congregation. Direct contributions to this program from parents or relatives of students are considered by PLU as not being in the spirit of the Pacific Lutheran University Matching Scholarship Program.
Dependents of Pacific Lutheran University employees are not eligible for a matching scholarship.
