Audrey Falk, PLU, BSNcWhy Nursing? Many factors have contributed to my choice to join the nursing profession. At the heart of my reasoning I have found a desire to be a positive influence in the lives of many, and nursing provides me with a venue to do so. As a nurse, I intend on providing individualized care to meet the needs of each of my patients while maintaining a professional and autonomous attitude of integrity. |

Conceptual Framework I have modeled my conceptual framework of nursing practice after Roy's Adaptation model. In this model, the nurse focuses on the adaptation of the patient and the environment. My understanding of this model of nursing practice is recognizing the importance of internal and external stimuli that influence the health of an individual. Within this recognition it is also important to note that most all of these stimuli can be modified by the nurse and/or patient to promote an acceptable state of well-being for the patient. Thus, the nurse becomes the mediator between the stimuli and the patient to help identify ways of coping and adaptation to promote the patient’s health. Philosophy of NursingEach individual carries her or his own personal philosophy of nursing practice.
Each individual carries her or his own personal philosophy of nursing, which is the foundation for their practice. At the core of any philosophy you will find beliefs and values held in high esteem for that venue. My own philosophy of nursing continues to grow and evolve as my practice expands, but what remains constant at the heart is the belief that as a nurse, I have a unique opportunity to positively influence an individual's life at a most vulnerable point, and in order to do so I must take a holistic approach in the delivery of each patient's care.ProfessionalismNursing today is much more than just an occupation. It has evolved into a professional career requiring a broad scientific knowledge base in addition to its need to be service-oriented. Factors contributing to the professional status of nursing include the ANA Code of Ethics, authority via licensure, a specialized set of skills, and continuing education. In order to perpetuate the professionalism of nursing, each nurse should adhere to these standards and beliefs. One and Five Year GoalsSophomore I Goals: Over the next year, my goal is to continue to pursue academic excellence within the nursing program. With a strong academic background, both in the science of nursing and in the liberal arts, I will be better able to reach diverse populations. In five years, I hope to be graduating from the program and entering the nursing profession with the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver competent care.Senior II Goals: During the next year, my goal is to enter into nursing practice in the field of psychiatric nursing. Within five years from now, I hope to be established enough in my career to return to graduate school for either a Doctorate of Nursing in Mental Health so I can become a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner or a Masters of Art Therapy so I can pursue my dream of integrating art therapy into mental health treatment. Reflection: In comparing my goals as a sophomore to my goals as a senior, I see a shift from broad ideals to specific ones. At the start of this program, my hope was simply to make it through with my head above water and find my path after that. Now I see my path was being paved throughout the entire journey. While receiving the education necessary to become a competent nurse, I was also gaining different perspectives and developing my sense of being with the help of my liberal arts courses. The pursuit of a psychology minor was inspired by my interest in human behavior. In addition, I found great expression through creative writing and art. All combined, these brought me to the path I am travelling now: mental health and art therapy. I am pleased to have grown over the past few years and to have found where my place in the world of nursing may be and I am excited to continue my journey. |
My Definition of Nursing "Nursing is an art, and if it is to be made an art, it requires as exclusive a devotion, as hard a preparation, as any painter's or sculptor's work." -Florence Nightingale, 1859
"Nursing is rooted in the needs of humanity... Its object is not only to cure the sick... but to bring health and ease, rest and comfort to mind and body. Its object is to prevent disease and to preserve health." -Harmer 1922 Over the course of my practice as a student, I have drawn upon several different definitions of nursing to build my own. As I see it, nursing is an art form that strives to both heal the sick and promote health in the well. This encompasses the many different facets of an individual that contributes to their well-being, which inevitably requires a holistic approach to health care. |
