Our Mission

What is the PLU Family Enterprise Institute?

The Family Enterprise Institute is a forum for interaction and learning across family generations, professional service providers, and academics - all of whom are concerned with the unique challenges facing family owned and controlled businesses.

Estimates are that family enterprise contributes as much as 65% of GNP and 50% of new job creation in the U.S. economy. While many family-owned businesses are small, as much as one third of the Fortune 500 are family-owned or controlled. Clearly, such businesses are the essence of entrepreneurial energy and free enterprise!

Despite such scale and impact, family enterprise is, in many respects, endangered. Family dynamics, difficulties in managing growth transitions, and hostile tax and regulatory environments make the preservation and promotion of family enterprise a formidable challenge.

That is why PLU created the Family Enterprise Institute. To provide real-world, leading-edge educational programs, advisory services, and policy analysis and advocacy. Practical, valuable, and timely support that nurtures individual, family, and business performance. Services that not only promote a high quality of life, but assure the future of the enterprise. Its purpose is simply stated:
"To preserve and promote family enterprise within the Pacific Northwest."
