Academic Requirements
Selecting Courses

   Most majors don't require you to take a specific course or set of courses during your first year in order to complete your degree in four years. However, for some majors listed below, there is initial coursework that is strongly recommended or required for first-year schedules. Your registration counselor is equipped with the information to guide you in creating an appropriate class schedule. Be sure to let your registration counselor know if any of the following are an area of interest: Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science/Computer Engineering, Engineering Dual Degree Program, Math, Music, Nursing, or Physics.

Admission Requirements

  • Mathematics
       Two years of college prep mathematics, C average or better
  • Foreign Language
       Two years of one foreign language, C average or better

Core Requirements
(Choose either Core I or Core II)

Core I
(Distributive and Disciplinary)

32 credit hours total
Core II
(International Core:
Integrated Studies of the Contemporary World)
28 credit hours
  • Art, Music, Theatre, AR (4 credit hours)
  • Literature, LT (4 credit hours)
  • Philosophy, PH (4 credit hours)
  • Religious Studies, R1, R2, R3 (8 credit hours: 4 credit hours from each of 2 lines)
  • Anthropology, History or Political Science, SI (4 credit hours)
  • Economics, Psychology, Sociology or Social Work, S2 (4 credit hours)
  • Natural Sciences, Computer Sciences or Math, NS (4 credit hours)
  • INTC 111/190 Development of Western thought with points of intersection with the non-Western world, I1 (8 credit hours)
  • 200-level thematic courses, I2 (16 credit hours)
  • 300-level courses, these courses are thematic and values-based I3 (4 credit hours)

First-Year Experience

  • WRIT 101, WR – Writing Seminar (4 credit hours); must be taken in either Fall or Spring (unless appropriate writing course previously taken at another college)
  • Inquiry Seminar 190 (4 credit hours): must be taken in either Fall, January, or Spring
  • January Term – you will take a 4 credit Janaury Term class

Other GURs

  • Math Reasoning, MR (4 credit hours)
  • Science and Scientific Method, SM (4 credit hours)
  • Perspectives on Diversity (8 credit hours) to include:
    • Alternative Perspectives, A (4 credit hours)
    • Cross-cultural Perspectives, C (4 credit hours)
  • Physical Education, PE (4 credit hours): four activity courses, including Personalized Fitness (PE 100)
  • Senior Seminar Project in the Major, SR (2-4 credit hours)

What if I Can't Decide Which Core is Right for Me?

   There are no fixed rules regarding who can or should choose one core rather than the other. Most students fulfill Core I requirements. However, there are students from every major in the Core II program as well. The main characteristics of students choosing Core II are an interest in international issues, openness to explore topics from a variety of perspectives and a willingness to be an active seminar participant.

   It may be difficult to decide which core requirements are a better fit for you. If you are undecided, you might consider beginning with Core II. Majors & Minors
