Program History

The faculty instituted the First Year Experience Program (FYEP) at Pacific Lutheran University as part of the new core curriculum requirements in the spring of 1992. Full implementation of what was then called the “Freshman Year Program” occurred in the 1995-96 academic year. At that time the program was comprised of three courses that included a 4-credit “Inquiry Seminar: Writing for Discovery,” a 2-credit “Inquiry Seminar: Critical Conversation,” and a J-Term General University Requirement (GUR) course.

During the 2001-02 academic year, the faculty approved legislation that replaced the Critical Conversation seminars and the freshman J-Term GUR courses with the 4-credit 190 Inquiry Seminars. As a result, the First Year Experience Program is now comprised of a two-course (8-credit) sequence consisting of the First Year Writing Seminars (Writing 101) and the 190 Inquiry Seminars both of which assist students in making the transition to college-level academics.
