Two Fellows in China

For the Fall semester of 2008, two of our Fellows will be studying in China through PLU's gateway semester program with Sichuan University.  Both Emily Isensee and Tyler Faust have sent us links to their blogs.  We are thrilled to be able to stay in touch and read about their exciting adventures throughout the semester!

Reflections From Tyler and Emily

Right now I'm in Vancouver's airport waiting for my flight to leave. Turns out that there's a typhoon in Hong Kong right now and our flight has been delayed for 12 hours! What luck! At least the view is pretty...

However, on the bright side, as many of you know I am sick but I feel much better and my ears did not explode off of my head on the flight like they were expected to. Although, I have not been able to hear well because they haven't popped since we've landed.

As for the group, people are playing cards, watching movies, reading magazines, some left to explore Vancouver, at least one is writing in his blog.

Thanks everyone for the support and the emails!

Tyler

So the day started off with arrival to Seattle airport, eager to get to Hong Kong. However I quickly discovered that that may be a rather distance hope, as Hong Kong was about to experience a typhoon. When I arrived in Vancouver Canada I discovered all air travel to Canada was put on hold. After several card games, a couple emails home, and creation of a list of things to do in the airport, I realized I would go crazy spending 16 hours in an airport and decided to head into the city of Vancouver with 5 other people from my group. Best Idea ever!! We got to experience a city I had never been to first hand. Our adventure began with a public bus ride into Vancouver and consisted of an afternoon of exploring Vancouver shopping, restuarants, and parks. A highlight of the day included seeing the count down to the 2010 Olympics. It was a great day and I enjoyed exploring a new place in such an unexpected way. When we arrived back to the airport we discovered the rest of our group board in the airport, still trying to find things to do to entertain themselves. What a fun and unexpected adventure of a day!
...I just found out the typhoon has hit Hong Kong and out flight will leave at the delayed time of 2am. I can't wait for more adventures to come!

Wang Center: Semester Program in China

Sichuan University - China

Students may spend a semester or year at Sichuan University (SU) in Chengdu, China. At SU, in addition to classes in Mandarin and Chinese culture, students take assorted courses that are taught in English. Often a PLU professor will accompany the group and teach one of the courses. Extensive study tours are included. Fluency in Mandarin is not required. Sichuan application form (fall semester)
