History 323: The Middle Ages
introduces students to the rich history and culture of Europe during the
Middle Ages, from Roman late antiquity (c. 200) to the High Middle Ages of
Western Europe (c. 1300). This course is designed to introduce students to
major themes in the development of western society, culture, religion,
politics, law, art, and literature. The civilizations, cultures, and themes
that we will study include the late Roman Empire, early Christianity and
monastic culture, Byzantine and Islamic civilizations, the Lombard kingdoms,
Merovingian and Carolingian Europe, the First Crusade, papal power and the
Investiture Controversy, economic revival and the ‘profit economy’ in the
High Middle Ages, Christian attitudes toward Jews, Scholasticism, Dominican
and Franciscan orders, and the love letters of Abelard and Heloise.
