A Little About Who I Am

Me

My name is Emily Haydu and I am from Southeast Alaska. I live in the wee little town called Craig with  about 1,200 people. It is also home to numerous black bear, deer, salmon, bald eagles, and trees. Our island is famous for its fishing, hunting, and logging, as well as being a big tourist attraction in the summer. Unless you really like the outdoor recreation, there is not a whole lot of "city entertainment" to keep you busy on the rainy days (and there are many).

I was raised in a Catholic family with four sisters and two wonderful parents. We were taught to work hard growing up and to hone the talents that God gave us. My parents instilled us with good ethics and also how to love one another. They stressed the importance of respect for every human being and the grace of forgiveness.

I came to PLU in the fall of 2006 and plan on graduating in the spring of 2010. So far my college experience has been good, but  challenging as well. I have a lot of support from family and friends, which helps me to get through the tough times in the nursing program. I am very excited about what the future will bring and I hope to eventually specialize in nursing and travel the world. I'm very passionate about helping others and making a positive impact on their lives!

Future Accomplishments

One year goals: To continue to get good grades with at least a 3.7 GPA or higher and remain on the Dean's List.

Five year goals:
Although I dont know what way the path will bend for me in the future, I have many goals that I would love to reach. After graduating and getting my Bachelor's of Science Nursing I want to start working in a hospital in Washington. I hope to gain as much experience as I can while beginning to get my GUR classes out of the way for graduate school. I want to become an Advanced Practice nurse with a focus in Pediatrics. After graduate school I want to explore the world as a traveling nurse for a couple of years. During this time I will be exposed to a variety of cultures and helping countries who are in greater need of health care than the United States. One of the places that I've always dreamed of going to help the people in need is Africa. I have always been drawn to that area, mostly because of the prevalence of AIDS and Malaria. The passion I have to travel their to make a positive change in even one persons' life still burns fervently.

Role challenges:
I think that my biggest challenges as a nurse will be developing my own philosophy of nursing as well as expanding nursing's body of knowledge. I believe this will be more difficult for me only because there are so many philosophies already out there that I first need to learn and understand. After I gain more experience and knowledge in the nursing field, then I hope to demonstrate a more concrete philosophy of my own, as well as add to the extensive body of knowledge in nursing. By standing on the shoulders of health-care professionals before me, I can begin to understand and practice the knowledge already available, as well as continue to expand it.
