General Description
Under the general supervision
of the News Director, the Weekend Edition Anchor hosts local newscasts
and cutaways during Weekend Edition.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Prepares and delivers local newscasts and program continuity.
- Operates the KPLU console and master control room.
- Observes news events on behalf of public and records salient elements for on-air presentation.
- Produces high-quality reports on important events and issues in a timely fashion.
- Serve as substitute local on-air host for other KPLU news programs.
- Plays an active role in KPLU on-air fund drives.
- Assists in the preparation of station promos and announcements.
- Assists KPLU callers, visitors and other constituents.
- Assists in organizing/maintaining equipment, supplies and facilities.
- Actively involved in station projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of journalistic ethics and standards -- specifically the standards of National Public Radio News.
- Skills to report in-depth news -- thorough researching, effective interviewing and organized record-keeping.
- Skills to produce high quality radio news -- using clear writing, clean production, smooth announcing.
- Understands and supports the KPLU Mission Statement, KPLU Principles
and Values Statement, and the role of KPLU within the university; and
actively participates in university activities.
- Understands and
supports the KPLU Ability to work under deadline pressure, making the
best of limited resources, attend remote events, and respond
effectively to diverse and changing circumstances.
- Skills and
ability to use (and adapt to new) computers, phones, radio consoles
tape recorders and other basic news technology.
- Ability to work
in a creative team environment to communicate effectively with
supervisor and colleagues, putting KPLU'S mission/goals in action.
- Ability to take news reporter kit to interviews, meetings, and news events.
- The individual must possess these skills and abilities or be able to
explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential
functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using
some other combination of skills and abilities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in
Broadcasting, Journalism, or beat specialty and two years on-air radio
experience, OR five years on-air radio experience.
- Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks.
