General Description
The Catering manager oversees all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the facility, the successful implementation of the facility’s events; and the standards, procedures, and supervision of staff associated with the Catering operation. Under the general direction of the Director, ensures clean, efficient and quality service to customers. Reports to the Director of Dining & Culinary Services.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Supervises front of the house staff and student employees.
- Conducts weekly meetings with direct reporting full and part time regular staff.
- Conducts monthly meeting with direct reporting temporary staff.
- Provide clear instructions, effective criticism, and redirection.
- Responsible for ensuring all employees/units are operating within the guidelines of the Pierce County Health Department.
- Evaluates employee performance for direct reporting staff and temporary personnel, following guidelines of performance appraisal set by the PLU human resources department.
- Develop, maintain, and modify an effective orientation process for direct reporting employees.
- Key role as mentor for Student employee and Student manager program.
- Provides on the job training, including but not limited to: management techniques, appropriate disciplinary procedures, and professionalism.
- Attends and participates in Student Manager Meetings.
- Evaluates student management performance each semester, utilizing guidelines of performance appraisal outlined by the PLU human resource department.
- Incorporate links to academic coursework as part of training experience.
- Maintains appropriate quality and professional standards on designated shift.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of food service sanitation procedures.
- Proficient with Word and Excel and familiarity with Project, Publisher, Microsoft Windows Office Suite.
- Ability to mutlitask, and extensive understanding of customer service principles and service recovery.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and customer service orientation to be applied in our team environment.
- Excellent problem solving and time management skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Working Conditions
- Will be exposed to hot, dry, cold, wet, and/or humid conditions.
- Will often work with and around standard kitchen/dish room equipment that requires personal protective equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand/walk up to 4 hours without a break.
- Ability to bend/stoop grasp objects, climb ladders, lift loads up to 50 lbs unassisted and push/pull carts weighing up to 100 lbs unassisted.
- Ability to visually examine products for quality and signage/labeling accuracy.
Required Qualifications
- Three years of progressive experience in food service management.
- High school diploma/GED required; Bachelor's degree in a related field desired.
- Must possess a valid Washington State Food Handler's Permit.
- Must possess a valid driver's license. Must have had a valid driver's license for at least 2 years.
- Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check, physical exam, pass PLU's internal Driver's Certification Training, and provide an original copy of their Driving Record (5 yr Employment Abstract).
