General Description
Responsible for the development, installation, configuration, and maintenance of a variety of PLU’s central computer and software systems. Team lead of Systems Administration staff. Reports to the Associate Provost for Info & Tech Services.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Provides system design and integration strategy for technologically diverse environment consistent with I&TS and University goals and objectives.
- Manages system resources including growth/capacity planning of existing and new services.
- Primary administrator of the following University systems:
- Enterprise LDAP directory - Fedora Directory Server on RHEL
- Enterprise calendaring - Oracle Calendar on RHEL
- University unified login (ePass) account creation and maintenance system (Identity Management and Single/Common Sign-On)
- Various web and database servers running on RHEL and Tru64 Unix and using Apache with PHP support, interfacing to MySQL (LAMP)
- Design, implement, and maintain scripts and programs for automating complex tasks and supporting web-based online services.
- Manager of the Unix and Windows Systems Administrators.
- Set goals, track progress of projects, and provide an experienced perspective on systems management topics.
- Develop and document procedures based on industry best-practices and applied within the PLU I&TS environment.
- Act as back-up administrator for team’s areas of responsibility.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with users and staff at all levels of technical experience.
- Proficiency in the following is required:
- Linux, Unix, Windows, MySQL, Apache, Unix-based E-mail Service System Administration
- C/C++, Perl, PHP & Shell-script, Web CGI, TCP/IP Socket, SQL, Structured and Object-oriented Programming; Enterprise Back-up and SAN/NAS Technology
- Directory Services (LDAP, Active Directory); Virtualization
- Proficiency in the following is highly desirable:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux, HP Tru64 Unix; Pubcookie; Squirrelmail; Vbscript & Java Programing; PMDF E-mail Server Software; Oracle; Familiarity w/ OpenVMS
Required Qualifications
- Five years of experience in Unix systems administration.
- Two years technical team lead experience.
- One year of personnel management highly desirable; additional years personnel management and other leadership responsibility desirable.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related subject area.
- Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks.
