This is a glimpse into my journey through nursing school as well as the philosophies, health promotion and applications I have learned and continue to learn until I graduate. I am currently a Sophmore II, finishing up my first year. I look forward to sharing what I have learned and look forward to applying what I will learn in the real world. Please check back often, as I will be adding more material as I move through the program. Being in nursing school is probably the hardest and the greatest experience I have had in my life. It seems to take up every waking thought and moment.

From the first moments that I started caring for elderly and vulnerable adults in the community back in 1998, I wanted to dedicate the rest of my life in the health care field. I went back to school at the age of 34 and slowly completed all my prerequisites for the nursing program. To get more experience, I traveled to Central America in 2007 and spent some time there volunteering in a long term care facility in San Ignacio, Belize. I am the first woman in my immediate family to get a college degree. I guess you could say that helping others is in the genes: my uncle was a police chief, my other uncle a firefighter, and my great-grandmother was a nurse during World War 2. I want to be a part of that family legacy.

My one year goal is to complete my first year of nursing school without losing my sanity. Kidding aside, I want to take what I have learned and work in a hospital while taking classes. I want to find time to volunteer again, which I haven't been able to do due to lack of time. I also need to take time out to enjoy life and get away from my school books once in a while.

My five year goal is to complete a DNP and work in an under served area of Washington. After that, I hope to travel and provide care overseas. I want to specialize in Geriatrics and Psychiatric/Mental health nursing.

What is Nursing?

nurse7 For me. nursing is about providing care for the whole community. One person's illness can impact not only the person experiencing it, but the rest of the family as well. Taking a holistic approach and caring for the entire person, as well as the immediate family, contributes to health and independence for everyone involved. Nurses can take their scientific knowledge, skill, and care to influence their communities and really make a difference in this age of ever increasing impersonal health care.

Florence Nightingale on Nursing:

"I use the word nursing for want of a better. It has been limited to signify little more than the administration of medicines and the application of poultices. It ought to signify the proper use of fresh air, light, warmth, cleanliness, quiet, and the proper selection and administration of diet-all at the least expense of the vital power to the patient."   1946
