Researching a Topic

There are many online, multimedia and print resources available through the library for doing research on a topic. The library Catalog, Journals at PLU, and databases are accessible from the Web. For assistance in obtaining the best information on a topic or designing effective research strategies, contact the reference desk on the main level of the library.

Find Journal Articles

Library databases which contain article citations and full-text articles are available via the Web.

To find the right electronic database that will have journal articles on your research topic:

  1. Access the "Find Articles" link from the library's home page [need a link here]
  2. Look at the databases available on your topic
  3. Choose one, click on it to connect
  4. Enter key words to search for articles

You can't  use Journals @ PLU to try to find articles on a topic -- use one of the databases under  the "Find Articles" link.

This department’s collections are available for student research and includes four collections: University Archives, Scandinavian Immigrant Experience Collection, Nisqually Plains Collection, Evangelical Lutheran Church Archives.

Evangelical Lutheran Church Archives

The collection provides information on the history of the Lutheran church in the Pacific Northwest from the 1880's to the present; on pastors and other who have been and are connected to the Lutheran Church, on congregational histories, on educational and charitable institutions and organizations.

The Nisqually Plains Collection records the local history of the Northwest and Parkland history, and the Tacoma Longshoreman's Union.

Get Help from Librarian Live

Through the library's Librarian Live service, you can get help with research while you’re online (hours of service).

After connecting to Librarian Live, type in your research questions and a librarian will chat with you.

If the answer can be found on a specific web page or web site, the librarian can send you the site, or they can guide you through one of the many databases that PLU has access to over the web. Web pages and other electronic resources will open in a separate browser on your computer's desktop.

You don't need any special software, just access to the web from any web browser.

To connect to the service, click on the yellow box located on the PLU Library home page, . After you type in your ePass and password, you will be connected to the Librarian Live service.

You'll need your Lute Card to check out resources from the library. You'll also need a barcode attached to your LuteCard--together this becomes your Library Card. Obtain your barcode at the Library Circulation Desk.

Every January 1 and September 1 full time students receive Copy Points credits on their LuteCards for 100 FREE prints or photocopies. Additional LuteBuck$ can be purchased at www.plu.edu/%7Elutecard/lutebuck/. The 100 FREE prints or photocopies, if not used, will expire December 31 and August 31.
