Sue GoldenSue Golden

Interlibrary Loan Coordinator

How does a young girl get from aspiring to be a cowboy to working in a library? It's a long story with some interesting travels and tales along the way. Fortunately for us Sue Golden is, as she puts it, very conversational. So just ask her, and know that you'll be in for a very interesting exchange.

As Interlibrary Loan Coordinator, Sue is responsible for a high-volume operation that each year delivers thousands of books and articles from other libraries to our students and faculty, and in turn responds to thousands of requests from other libraries for our books and articles. In short, she is at the heart of the information access and sharing revolution that demands efficiency in handling print materials as well as prowess in assessing and implementing new technologies.

A "cradle Episcopalian," Sue believes her religious background has provided her with a large measure of independence in thought and action, a strong sense of self, and generally an anchor throughout her life.

She has been married 36 years to her best friend, has raised two daughters, and has been a life-long tender of pets. Or, as she puts it, four dogs, four cats, and a horse have all found their way into her life and household, the dogs and cats all as adoptees. Sue's husband has a Harley Davidson motorcycle, so they named one of their cats Harley. He turned out to be a 14-pounder, so they think of him literally and figuratively as a hog!

What is Sue's idea of a fun time? Just what you'd expect for one who used to dream of being a cowboy -- horseback riding. In fact, Sue can't remember ever not riding a horse. Or for that matter a life without animals of some sort around, beginning with early life on a small farm in Oregon.

So how did Sue end up working in our library? About 11 years ago, with her daughters in high school, she decided she wanted an additional job. She happened to see our ad for a position in the Circulation Department and applied for it. The rest, as they say, is history. Just ask her.
