Program Outcome:
To collaborate in the design, management, and coordination of care.
Collaborating and working with others towards improvement is an important part of nursing.
- During our clinical experience in nursing 220, my peers and I collaborated when it came to tasks such as giving bed baths, changing sheets, and moving a resident from a bed to a chair with an assistive lift. By working together through these things, we were able to learn from each others input.
- While at my designated nursing home in 220, I was given the opportunity to complete an environmental assessment for my resident which I believe is an important thing to do to see if the design of the environment is working for that particular client.
- In my nursing 260 class, six of my peers worked with me to create a paper and a presentation on an issue relevant to our country today. We collaborated on the topic of universal health care, and made several discoveries we wouldn't have made on our own.
- In my medical-surgical rotation, I collaborated in the design and management of care by creating concept maps, which organized and individualized priorities for each patient.
- In my senior seminar class, a fellow student and I led a seminar on the topic of GI bleeding. We created a PowerPoint presentation which touched upon the important concepts to consider when caring for a person with a GI bleed, what to look for, and what to expect. We also led a class discussion on the topic.
- In Nurs420, Leadership and Resource Management, I was exposed to different forms of leadership, and effective ways of managing people (staff and patients). It is vital to communicate and coordinate in a functional way with everyone involved in the management and design of patient care. In this class, I was involved in a Quality Improvement Project, in which I needed to work closely with a group of people. To do this in the best, most organized way possible, we created "minutes" for each meeting we had, which helped record our progress and identify what needed to be done each week.
Future Attainments
In the future, I know I will gain much experience in collaborating with other nurses, physicians, families, and other health care providers in the management and design of patient care. As an RN with a BSN, I will be looking for opportunities to use my leadership and management skills, such as becoming a charge nurse on a unit.
