Marta's Nursing Portfolio

Dimensions

Program Outcome:

Demonstrate the ability to incorporate the dimensions of person, nursing, and environment to promote health in a variety of nursing situations.

There are fundamental beliefs and values about the world and about people in general that I hold, which help to develop how I carry out the promotion of health in various nursing situations. These intrinsic beliefs can be found in my definition of nursing, my "coat of arms", and my philosophy of nursing.  As I graduate and transition into the role of the Registered Nurse, I plan to use these three tools, by taking what I know of people, what I know of nursing, and what I know of the environmental factors we all face to promote health in the best possible way according to the situation I am in.

Current Philosophy

If you would like to read my current beliefs about nursing, my philosophy of nursing worksheet is provided through this link:

PLU School of Nursing's Definition:

"Nursing is an intellectual discipline that is both an art and a science. It is a profession rooted in service. Caring is the essence of nursing and the unifying focus for its knowledge, theory, and research. Guided by caring, nurses deliver humanistic health care in and across all environments to all persons - individuals, families, and communities. Built on a liberal arts education, nursing draws on the competencies, knowledge, and values that are needed to ensure that all persons achieve clinical, functional, adaptive, and eudemonistic health, or well being. As the context and scope of nursing practice changes, the role of the nurse continues to develop. Inherent in this role is the responsibility for political and social activism."

Defining Nursing

My definition of nursing is a work in progress as I am continually learning.

"To provide patients with the right amount of support, as well as the type of attitude and way of caring in which to promote health and the best possible sense of well-being."

 Accomplishments:

There are several courses which I have taken that have added to my experience of promoting health within the dimensions of person, nursing, and the environment.

In a religion class of mine, I did an assignment entitled "Attention Epistemology" in which I was able to observe a scene in nature, analyze and define environment, as well as think about who created it and how it affects the lives which live in it.  To read about this project click links below:

Summary Analysis

In my Microbiology class, I studied the emergence of new diseases, how the environment has played a role in the life of humans over time, and in what direction we are currently heading.  Here is a linked copy of a paper from that class:

The Coming Plague

In my Multicultural Perspectives class, we were actually assigned to do an interview on a family member, to better understand their background and how their lifestyle and environment shaped who they are.  I interviewed my mother and learned a great deal about why she is the way she is.  Doing something like this will help me with what to take into consideration when caring for a variety of patients.

In my Mental Health rotation, which I spent at the VA hospital, "American Lake" in Lakewood, WA, we were taught to focus on the holistic care of our patients, including spiritual wellness, mental wellness, as well as physical well-being.  This practice should be incorporated into all types of nursing, not just psychiatric.  Below is a link to a journal I wrote during this Mental Health rotation which expands upon the need for caring for both patients and self in a holistic way which involves environment, nursing, and individual considerations.
