Evidence-Based Care

Program Outcome:

To provide evidence-based clinically competent care.

OR

Competent Care:

Through each rotation in the nursing program, I have provided many different types of evidence-based clinically competent care.

In my medical-surgical clinical rotations, I was given the opportunity to provide a substantial amount of thorough and competent nursing care to adults undergoing surgeries and/or disease processes.  I practiced evidence-based best care by researching journals related to the patients I was caring for.  The following link is a journal from one of my med-surg rotations which includes these experiences as well as summaries of evidence-based research articles I modeled my care after.

Below are evaluations I filled out for my own personal performance in the care I provided in my Medical Surgical II course, including a list of patients with varying diagnoses/situations.

Evidence-based Research

In the spring semester of my junior year I took Nursing Research and Informatics, which provided me with a better understanding of evidence-based care.  It is tremendously important to research best practice, and to apply those concepts to the care you give as a nurse.  I plan to use evidence to support the decisions I make throughout my nursing career.

The most valuable tool that I learned from this nursing research class, was how to read through and understand a research article, including methods, materials, and statistics.  Each component is a significant factor to whether or not the article's content is reliable, and when pulling data from different sources to incorporate into your professional practice, this is an invaluable skill.

Links to my first clinical experience:

For my first clinical experience as a sophomore, I provided competent nursing care to the elderly adult population at Linden Grove Health Care Center in Puyallup, WA.  Below is a link to a summary of that experience as well as the instructor's evaluation of my performance.

Evidence-Based Practice to come:
I plan on taking what I have learned throughout my classes here at PLU to always practice evidence-based care.  By studying the most current research, and distinguishing the valid studies from the invalid ones, I will know which research to pull information from.  I will take the time to learn where my workplace bases their policies from, to ensure that we are indeed performing best practice in all situations.
