Let me introduce myself...

My name is Marta Larsen, I grew up on Anderson Island and attended Tacoma School of the Arts high school, two places with a strong sense of community.

meI decided to come to Pacific Lutheran University to be close to home, and also for their distinguished nursing program.  I have learned much about myself and others, as well as the dynamics of nursing.  Each year has been a wonderful and exciting new experience, and I am looking forward to continually building upon my knowledge and skills.  After graduation, when I have received my Bachelors of Science in Nursing, I will start out in the Emergency Department.  I am very passionate about emergency nursing, making critical and quick decisions for my patients, which greatly affect their outcomes.  However, I ultimately hope for the opportunity to work in many areas of nursing throughout my life, and in many places of the world.

Feel free to send me an e-mail: larsenma@plu.edu

Challenges...

I have been expecting and preparing myself for the challenges of this program and future career.

Some things I learned to accomplish and overcome during the nursing program:

  • Finding balance between studies and clinical hours
  • Learning to be aggressive and a critical thinker
  • Understanding needs of patients and families
  • Expecting no rewards for the care I give

Some challenges I am expecting to encounter as a new, professional RN:

  • "Fitting in" at the workplace, and feeling a part of the team
  • Effectively communicating with and coordinating care with other health care providers such as physicians, nutritionists, case managers, therapists, and others.
  •  Knowing that to be a nurse, it is a life of continual learning, and I will never know everything.
