Participation

Program Outcome:

To participate in processes that influence the health care delivery system.

Universal Health Care

In my nursing 260 course, my group and I researched the issue of health care in our country, and proposed different ways in which we could solve current problems.  To return to the collaboration page where I also mention this issue,     click here

Making a Difference

In my Leadership and Management class, our group implemented a change for the Mental Health Class in the nursing program at PLU.  We assessed the situation and found that many nursing students are under a lot of stress and often times do not handle it very well.  We created a brochure with interventions for students to manage their stress, and we also had the Counseling Center from PLU come and present their services to the Sophomore Mental Health Class students.

In my Community Health Class, I implemented a tool for the caregivers at five different Adult Family Homes to use when deciding whether or not the residents of the homes need side rails or other fall precaution implementations.  Residents were falling, which is unacceptable.  Because of this project, these homes now have a way to educate their caregivers about falls, and tools to help them prevent further incidents.

In my Nursing Policy class, we were encouraged to learn about bills in the legislative process right now, which, if passed, will have a direct impact on health care.  I had the opportunity to attend "Nurse Lobby Day" in Olympia, WA, and attend a public hearing.  Also in this class, I participated in a debate which argued against the legalization of marijuana.

In my Nurs480 class, "Professional Foundations II", three other classmates and I gave a 60 minute presentation on the importance of nurses' role in politics and policy, as well as how we as new RN's can get involved in the re-structuring and formation of health care.   We also researched the topic of getting involved in politics to influence environmental health, and wrote a paper on the subject which is included below.

Making Future Improvements...

Especially as a nurse, we must take the initiative to positively influence something as important as health care.  Nurses are very often the people who have first-hand experiences and the greatest knowledge in decisions which affect health care.  Policy makers have the power to change the delivery of care.  Nurses need to be the force behind these policy makers and legislative leaders, in order to ensure the quality of our health care system.

green change

My plan to staying involved in the processes which influence health care is to:
  • Join professional nursing organizations such as the American Nurses' Association, the Washing State Nurses' Association, and the Emergency Nurses' Association
  • Read the latest research to stay current on best evidence-based practice
  • Attend hearings and send letters to my legislature to voice my informed opinion on issues which affect my professional and personal life as a nurse.
