Program Outcome:
To enact the role of service as a professionally educated member of society.
Just a few examples of services I have provided while in the nursing program at PLU:
- In the fall of 2007 I volunteered at Gateways for Youth and Families. This organization in Tacoma provides many services for families and youth, especially those in foster care. I specifically was involved in their teen center, which is a place for high-risk teens to come and have a safe place to learn and find guidance in their lives.
Below are links to a couple of reflections I wrote while volunteering with Gateways for Youth and Families: Reflection 1 Reflection 2
- I have also been a mentor for a youth infected with HIV/AIDS since the summer of 2008. This mentorship is through a non-profit organization called REACH ministries, which provides a wide range of care for families dealing with HIV/AIDS. My role includes spending time with, listening to, and encouraging this young woman to become the best that she can be. Our relationship was built upon at least two meetings a month, and at least one phone conversation a week. It is a truly fulfilling form of service, based on compassion, knowledge, and Christian values. I have had the privilege to watch my mentee grow in her confidence and self-respect throughout the years I have worked with her.
- In my Nursing 270 class, along with a few of my peers, I taught a class on giving self breast-examinations to female college students on the PLU campus. We taught them about the importance of screening, the prevalence of breast cancer, and different techniques to use. We even included diagrams, mannequins, and games. - As a part of my Community Health class, my classmates and I joined forces with the Medical Reserve Corps. The MRC branches out of the Pierce County Health Department. It is an organization comprised of medical and non-medical volunteers, who help out in times of public health crisis/needs. As part of the MRC, I volunteered to give flu vaccinations to hundreds of homeless at the 2009 "Homeless Connect" event at the Tacoma Dome.

Future Goals in Service:
I will strive to continue looking for opportunities to volunteer my time and services. I plan to remain involved with REACH ministries for at least 1-2 years. I am also planning on volunteering my time and services by going on medical mission trips to underprivileged areas, where otherwise communities would not have access to or be able to afford health care.
