PLU Interlibrary Loan with ILLiad Frequently Asked Questions
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service, provided by Information & Technology Services, to obtain materials which are not available in the PLU library. The conditions of this service are set by the National Interlibrary Loan code.
ILLiad is the software program the ILL department uses to manage ILL
requests and user information. You, the patron, also use it to make, track, and retrieve your requests.
Interlibrary Loan is available to PLU community members, namely:
Individual journal articles can be requested, and you may receive either an electronic copy or a printed photocopy.
Books, musical scores, theses and dissertations can be requested (but many libraries don't lend dissertations).
Videos/DVDs/CDs can not be borrowed by students (faculty should review this link for film/video options ).
Failure to return books by the due date results in fines to your student account. If they are considered “lost,” your student account is charged for the replacement cost and processing fees.
Libraries can refuse to loan to PLU—as we in turn can refuse loans to those not returning our items—if books are not returned or are returned very late.
Though Interlibrary Loan does not cost the student directly, each request made through ILL averages $25.00.
NOTICE WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy, or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

There is no charge to you for obtaining ILL material (the average cost to PLU is $25.00 per request). Certain restrictions do apply when the cost exceeds $25.00 per item.
Many databases (EBSCOHost, FirstSearch, etc.) have a direct
link to ILLIad that will automatically fill out the form with all the
article/book information. If you already know the exact book or article you want, and have complete bibliographic
information, you can submit a request using the ILLiad
form. Remember to check the PLU online
catalog and Journals@PLU before requesting materials.
If it's your first time using ILLiad, you'll need to create an account. This is separate from your ePass and allows you to keep track of all your requests. See the First Time Users page for more information.
ILliad will limit the amount of active requests a patron has at any given time based on the status of the patron. However, this is revolving limit. Once you delete a journal article from Electronic Delivery, or you return a book, the number of active requests is reduced and you may submit more. Patrons who find that they have reached their limit are encouraged to contact a librarian, by phone ( 253-535-7507) or email, to obtain assistance in identifying alternative materials available in the Mortvedt library.
Undergraduates: Limit of 10 outstanding requests
Graduate: Limit of 10
Staff: Limit of 10
Faculty No limit
Most article photocopies are delivered electronically to your PLU e-mail as PDF files.
You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on the computer where you read your mail. Make sure that pop-ups are allowed on your computer.
The loan period is determined by the lending library. It is usually 2 to 4 weeks.
To maintain positive relationships with lending institutions, it is essential that items we borrow are returned on time and in good condition. If items are not returned by the date due, a fine of $.25 a day will levied and may be paid at the library Circulation desk. Fines not paid will be added to a student’s account.
Overdue notices will be sent by e-mail. Three notices will be sent: The first when the item is 7 days overdue, the second when it is 14 days late and the third at 28 days.
With a third notice the patron’s account will be blocked until the item is returned and fines paid.
Renewal should be done through your ILLiad account. Log on to ILLiad, click View/ Checked Out Items/Click on the Transaction Number of the book you wish to renew. Click on Renew Request, this will send a request of ten days renewal to the lending library. If you are having problems renewing an item, please contact the ILL staff.
Also, be aware that the lending library may not grant the renewal. You are expected to return all items on time and bear in mind that all Interlibrary Loans are subject to recall by the lending library.
We are located in Technical Services at the north end of the library.
Our hours are 7:30am to 4:00pm, check at the Front Desk or Reference Desk after hours if you have questions.
