Process for Creating Posters

Plan
  • Identify objectives
    • Clearly desribe messages you want to get across
    • Prioritize messages for design process
    • Select method of evaluation
  • Describe specifications and recommendations
    • Height of board
    • Title size
    • Footprint
    • Travel plans
  • Develop scale model
    • Test headlines and kickers
    • Test organization and flow
  • Identify resources available
Gather and Digitize
  • Collect Relevant Materials
    • Text: Title, body, tables
    • Graphics: Diagrams, charts, maps, logos, etc.
    • Photos: Snapshots, slides
    • Misc: Brochures, illustrations, 3D Materials
  • Digitize
    • Keyboard
    • Scanner
      • Images
      • Optical character recognition (OCR)
      • Video frame capture
Design
  • Chunk up the content into managable messages
    • Organize by message
    • Priorize information with design
    • Layout to represent logical flow
  • Select materials to be used
    • Select boards, papers, etc.
    • Select color schemes
    • Add variety with colors, textures, shapes
  • Design your materials to be:
    • Visible
    • Clear
    • Simple
Produce
  • Layout chunks of content with computer software
    • Powerpoint
    • PageMaker
    • Drawing program
  • Edit and check!
  • Produce pages by:
    • Laser printer
    • Color printer
    • Color copies
    • Photography
Layout

Layout materials in approximate position on board to check for relative positioning and space before trimming anything.

  • Cut boards
  • Sandwich and drymount, spray, or tape
    • Title
    • Chunks
  • Layout for space check
  • Pasteup to board
  • Highlight relationships
  • Complete hinges, braces
Package

Package with plastic, butcher paper, etc. for:

  • Travel
  • Storage
  • Weather
Poster Presentation Survival Kit

Take backup materials for setup, repair, and any surprises.

  • Double stick tape
  • Strong packing tape
  • Extra matte board
  • Matte knife
  • Scissors
  • Handout version
  • Tacks or pins
