This two part series will begin with a historical review, including the Biblical period, the advent of Christianity and Islam, the succession of conquests and occupations, including Arab and Jewish life on the land. This overview will continue with the major 20th century events: the Balfour Declaration, British Mandate, growth of two nationalisms, creation of the states of Israel, series of Arab-Israeli wars, occupation of the West Bank and Gaza strip, Israeli governments, roles of the PLO and Hamas, and movements for peace.

Finally, Dr. Peterson will consider the 21st century situation: the major players, the present status of the conflict, the arguments and actions of both sides, and the major issues and obstacles in the way of peace. This NPR site provides a great overview of the topic: http://www.npr.org/news/specials/mideast/history/index.html?sc=emaf. John will also share about his time spent in Israel and his acquaintance with the people and events.

Dr. Peterson spent four full-year sabbaticals in Jerusalem and did post doctoral work at Hebrew University and the University of Tel Aviv. He also taught three PLU Interim study courses in the Middle East. He is Professor Emeritus of Religion, PLU and taught there from 1967-2004. He did his undergraduate work at St. Olaf College and Luther Seminary and earned his PhD from New York University in Hebrew and Near Eastern Studies.
