Okemah, Oklahoma in 1912 and died in New York in 1967. He is recognized as the
most important figure in American folk singing having written over 200 songs

songs were expressions of his times, chronicling the dreams, hopes and
suffering for those who were displaced by the Great Depression of the thirties.
In May 1941 he was hired on a 30 day contract by Bonneville Power to write
songs for a film about the Columbia River. This program uses Woody's songs and
his words about the Pacific NW to tell a tale about the sociology and politics of that time.
Carl Allen started singing Woody Guthrie tunes when he was attending
Washington State U. and involved in a trio called the Wanderers. The trio broke
