Woody Guthrie and The Columbia River Songs

Presenter: Carl Allen/Inquiring Mind

Location:  Garfield Book Co./Community Room

Time: 10:30--Noon

Class Fee:  $10.00

Class Coordinator:  Gene Giannobile, dgg2504@comcast.net

Woody Guthrie  was born in Okemah, Oklahoma in 1912 and died in New York in 1967. He is recognized as the most important figure in American folk singing having written over 200 songs and ballads, including "This Land Is Your Land" and "Roll on Columbia." His songs were expressions of his times, chronicling the dreams, hopes and suffering for those who were displaced by the Great Depression of the thirties. In May 1941 he was hired on a 30 day contract by Bonneville Power to write songs for a film about the Columbia River. This program uses Woody's songs and his words about the Pacific NW to tell a tale about the sociology and politics of that time.

Carl Allen started singing Woody Guthrie tunes when he was attending Washington State U. and involved in a trio called the Wanderers. The trio broke up but Carl and another member of the trio, Bill Murlin, continue to sing Woody Guthrie songs at state fairs, folk festivals, and coffee houses. In 1984 Murlin, a Bonneville Power employee was assigned the task of finding the 26 songs that Woody wrote in 1941 for use in the 50th celebration of Bonneville Dam. This program is the result of research on Woody Guthrie's life and times. Allen has done musical sound tracks at KCTS 9.

Gail Janes is a multifaceted artist who will demonstrate inexpensive and creative ways to use basic papers, i.e. brown paper bags, tissue paper, etc. and turn them into beautiful wrapping papers, greeting cards, and of course, frameable works of art. Gail has won may awards for her innovative art. Her credentials include being the head of education for the Tacoma Art Museum for 12 years. She has taught art in the Tacoma public school in junior and senior high and for the Metro Park system in Tacoma and University Place for over 10 years.

Margie Mankin will be demonstrating various techniques in mono-printing. Mono-printing is essentially a printed painting. No two prints are alike but the images can be similar. The appeal of this art lies in its unique translucency that creates a quality of light very different from a painting on paper or a print. The creativity involves a combination of printmaking, painting, and drawing mediums. Margie has taught art for many years in the Puget Sound area. She shows and sells her art in a Gig Harbor art gallery which she shares with other local artists. Margie previously taught an water painting class for LIFE.
