Typing accent marks: A guide

There are different ways for typing accent marks, depending on your particular computer. In programs like Word, on any computer, you can go to INSERT: SYMBOL to find most diacritic marks.

On PCs, regardless of age or program, you can try these alt + number sequences.

Spell-check: some guidelines

If you have the spell-check and grammar editors installed for your language (as do all the computers in the LRC), you can spell-check your document in Word. Here are some tips:

  • First, you must select the entire text (EDIT:SELECT ALL) then go to TOOLS:LANGUAGE:SET LANGUAGE to chose your language.
  • Remember, these are only tools. These tools will NOT correct your paper for you. They will, however, signal some areas of concern that may or may not have an error, and suggest possible changes.
  • Please refer to PLU's Department of Languages and Literatures' policy on machine translation- in most cases, using on-line translation tools such as Google translation consistitutes academic dishonesty. Machine Translation Policy.
