The rich tradition of Pacific Lutheran University football, fostered by seven national title game appearances and three championships in 15 NAIA postseason appearances, has carried over into PLU's four-year NCAA membership. The Lutes have made four straight Division III postseason appearances, highlighted by the 1999 season. That year, the Lutes won five straight playoff games on the road, including the Division III national championship Stagg Bowl game in Salem, Va.
The architect of that tradition is Frosty Westering, a member of a select fraternity of college football coaches who have won at least 250 games. This "Who's Who" group includes Eddie Robinson, John Gagliardi, Paul "Bear" Bryant, Charles "Pop" Warner, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden and Tom Osborne. Westering picked up his 250th career victory in the 1997 season opener and since that time has only added to his legacy. He enters the 2002 season, his 39th as a collegiate football head coach, with a 294-89-7 overall record (.763 winning percentage).
Westering has built an outstanding tradition of excellence with a 250-63-5 (.794 winning percentage) during his 30-year tenure at Pacific Lutheran. That excellence is not only evident on the playing field, where PLU has won four national championships in eight title-game appearances, but in the classroom and in community service as well.
Success in the win-loss column is certainly a trademark of Westering's coaching style. Winning and success, however, are viewed as by-products of Westering's philosophy. He emphasizes a double-win theme: victory on the scoreboard and the satisfaction of playing to one's personal potential.
A distinctive of the PLU football program is involvement in Tacoma area schools. For more than a decade, team members have been actively involved in the lives of students at McIlvaigh and Lister schools. These role model relationships are essential, says Westering, to the overall personal development of Lute football players.
