About the Matrix
The Matrix is Pacific Lutheran University's Journal of Social Justice, and it exists as an alternative forum to the artistic endeavors of Saxifrage and the journalistic pursuits of the Mast, as a print outlet seeking to combine the political and aesthetic dimensions of life in order to raise awareness about the world and advocate for the much needed Social Justice necessary to maintain it.
As far as printing, the Matrix puts out two issues per a semester, totalling four issues per a year, featuring content that is generally centered on a specific theme dealing with issues that generate awareness and advocacy for Social Justice. Some past themes have included Gender & Sexuality, Politics & Peace, and, soon, Culture & Identity. Keep in mind, all content is accepted, so worry not about your wild choices in medium and the varied styles one might have, because everything, from hand-written journal entries, essays, poetry, photographs, paintings, water-colour, fiction, journalism, interviews, think pieces, sketches, letters, and anything else, will be accepted, because if you can produce it - we can print it!
Although that might seem like a license to submit anything (and we do enjoy seeming as such), it should be noted that what you produce (or have produced) should be, in some way, related to the 'theme' of each issue. Otherwise, even if it is the greatest work ever known or read, it may, unfortunately, end up not being in the issue. However, if your piece is not only relatable to the theme of the issue, but also capable of raising awareness or advocating for Social Justice, even better! So don't sweat the small stuff, but lets at least keep it topical, kay?
Remember, the Matrix, although a journal with an actual staff, is brought together by students from every walk of life, and the staff greatly encourages former contributors and new people, students and staff alike, interested in writing, art, design, and editing to come by our office, whether to help or to chat - maybe even toss around a few ideas about that next submission of yours! ;) After all, the Matrix is run entirely by its members, which means people like you! So, join us in raising awareness and advocating for Social Justice, for everyone has a voice. The dialogue is open, from the mundane to the existential - speak freely, speak openly.
Yours truly,
The Matrix
