Goal:
The goal of the conference is to provide a NW regional conference that
explores men's role in ending violence against women. Though they are
few, opportunities like this allow professionals in the field and
others in the community to examine how we might all address this
pandemic.
*Due to space restrictions, registration will be limited to the first 200 registrants. Early registration is highly encouraged.

This new performance explores and deconstructs traditional male gender roles through examining the experience of a few characters. The first introductions are traditionally defined men who are familiar to us, but are in truth only a facade of the real man. As we learn about these individuals we begin to see the difficulty these men face in their own lives as they cope with the implications of creating a healthy manhood for themselves.
Workshop Sessions: - a
national organization committed to "influence change in men's behavior
through a re-education and training process that challenges sexism"
- a NW regional organization committed to: "increasing men's
involvement in preventing violence and unhealthy relationships by encouraging
and supporting male leaders in the creation and sustainment of programs that
engage and support men into effective action"
* will be podcast
- a multimedia program from Seattle University, designed to create
dialogue around gendered violence by more effectively engaging the audience
than traditional presentations.
- Parents of
Crystal Judson who was murdered by her ex-husband David Brame, former Tacoma
Police Chief. Their two part program tells the story of Crystal's life, what she went through and
gives us a powerful example of what we as a community can do to create change.
Approaches Toward Prevention: Self-Defense
- "Exploring and enhancing men's involvement
in self-defense courses through context, process, and participant impact"
- PLU's own Sexual Assault Peer Education Team program which seeks to educate and challenge
students to consider the impact of language and myth in social acceptance of
men's violence.
* will be podcast
- Review of recent DOJ OVW sponsored research with PLU
students and the social marketing campaign designed to address areas of
concern. A great session for those contemplating a similar program on their
campus.
* will be podcast
- As part of an "Innovation Panel", the directors of these two cutting edge
programs will discuss how these efforts have changed the face of prevention and response in the NW and around the nation.
Organizing Men In your Community - "Organizing Men in your Community - A Five Step Process that Just Might Work". Ben Atherton-Zeman follows his performance "Voices of Men" with a workshop that will give practical suggestions on how to get men in your community engaged in working to end gender violence.
Men's Role in Violence Prevention Roundtable - This session will provide an opportunity to engage with other regional leaders in dialogue around goals, strategies, best practices, etc regarding men's role in this work.
