History

Tacoma/South Puget Sound County MESA was established in 1984 and served an initial population of approximately twenty students. Since that time, the program has grown immensely and currently serves over 800 students. Over 92% of our graduates go on to colleges and universities across the country. MESA students earn university degrees in engineering and science at a rate that is nearly five times greater than the national average. (NSF 2006)

Washington State MESA works to support underrepresented students achieving and contributing their full potential in mathematics, engineering and science.

MESA's Mission Statement

MESA's mission is to:

  • provide enriching opportunities in mathematics, engineering, and science for underepresented students (African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, and female) in grades k-12 through the use of exemplary materials and instructional approaches;

    and . . .

  • be a catalyst and model for educational excellence and equity.

We accomplish this though a partnership of higher education, school districts, industry and business, government, community organizations, families and alumni.
