NURSING OUTCOME
Apply the nursing process in the provisions of direct and indirect care of individuals, families, and communities in a variety of settings and across diverse populations.

» The first experience I had applying my medical knowledge occurred in Anthropology 102, Spring semester 2007. Our professor gave us the opportunity to become mock anthropologists with a culture simulation on the computer. We experienced many different aspects of the Mexican culture of "Amopan". For our last writing assignment, we were instructed to apply anything we had learned throughout the semester to the simulated culture.I chose to write about the medicine in the community. I discussed their teachings and traditions and compared then with Western practice. (Please see Anthropology link to the right!)
Implementation in the Program
» Early in the program, I was able to practice the nursing process. Nursing 220 provided me with the opportunity to provide care to a diverse population of patients with many different diagnoses. The application was the same for each individual, but I was challenged to approach each individual differently and formulate my activities to their specific situation.
» In Nursing 270, we were given an assignment that entailed obtaining a peer health history and performing a mock physical exam on a class partner. This assignment encouraged me to assess this individual in a "health setting" over each of Gordon's functional health patterns. In the end I was to make a nursing diagnosis based on the information I obtained. Although I did not follow this with planning and implementation, I was able to evaluate my partner on Nursing Process performance.
In the Future
» My future clinical rotations will provide me with the opportunity to apply the nursing process to patients in mental health facilities, medical/surgical floors, Labor and Delivery Units, and Pediatric care.
